This fun family home design began as a 1970s misfit on a 1/3-acre lot in Mill Valley. Working within the original footprint and using the existing foundation and structure, UBW doubled this “entertainer’s paradise” to 3,850 square feet, with five bedrooms and 4.5 baths. The home is integrated into multiple outdoor spaces, with a mix of intimate and social gatherings. An inefficient driveway was repurposed by reorienting the garage, making way for a concrete multi-purpose sports court. Designing a hillside house is no small feat, and this family home design represents several of UBW’s design philosophies: efficient floor plans with little to no hallways, double-island kitchens, tall windows to create light-filled voluminous spaces, and flexible rooms that function as offices, guest rooms, and retreats. Together, these work to create an exceptional flow between the principal interior spaces to promote family connectedness and allow for gracious entertaining.
